Kiama NSW (Saturday) – Taming the Behaviour Monster – Positive Behaviour Management

This interactive, fun and engaging seminar, presented by Ian Luscombe, will inspire you to approach your peers, students and parents in a new way. Sharing new insights and techniques that result in improved understanding, communication and relationships, we will explore the underlying reasons for why kids do what they do and provide positive and corrective strategies for managing the myriad of annoying behaviours you are likely to encounter. Throughout the day you will have the chance to question your thinking, entertain new thoughts and gain practical ready-to-use strategies to help you and your students excel. You will be guided through a script to use when you are met with defiant behaviour.

• The 3 major ways to manage disruptive behaviour.
• The importance of managing our own emotions, and how to do it.
• How to promote consistency among staff when dealing with students with challenging behaviours.
• Written rules vs Unwritten rules.
• Specific management techniques for students with oppositional behaviour.
• Examining some of the reasons students behave the way they do.
• A technique for dealing with situations that you don’t know how to deal with.
• School culture and how it either supports or hinders the consistent application of rules.
• The use of preventative scripts to encourage compliance.
• The use of corrective scripts when we need to set limits around behaviour.
• How to give an instruction that will encourage compliance.
• Practical step-by-step methods for dealing with non-compliance. This includes and is not limited to; the actual words teachers use, the tone with which they are used, the importance of proximity, redirection, vicarious praise, selective attending, wait time, relationship building and humour.
• Why a ⅓ of positive feedback doesn’t work, and ways to get around this.
• “We get what we accept.” Exploring the reasons why we “accept” certain behaviours that we really don’t want to, and strategies to get us out of this common trap.
